De slikbare maagballon is een capsule die met water wordt doorgeslikt en maanden later op natuurlijke wijze wordt uitgescheiden.

Wanneer de ballon goed in de maag is geplaatst, wordt de ballon opgeblazen met een speciale vloeistof met een draadachtige katheter die aan de achterkant van de capsule is bevestigd, en wordt er opnieuw een film getrokken om te controleren of de ballon is opgeblazen. De inslikbare maagballon valt binnen 4 maanden spontaan uiteen en wordt via het darmkanaal weggeslingerd. Hoewel de gescheurde ballon zeer zeldzaam is, kan deze echter een darmobstructie veroorzaken en daarom kan een operatie nodig zijn.

De procedure verwijdert vet dat moeilijk te verwijderen is door gerichte lichaamsbeweging of een dieet. Het succes van een dergelijke operatie hangt af van de elasticiteit van de huid van de patiënt, de leeftijd, het gewicht en zijn/haar verwachtingen. Liposuctie is een lichaamsvormende operatie en is zeker geen afslankoperatie.
